Introduction:
After World War I, large numbers of African Americans began migrating to the North in order to find work and escape oppression from Jim Crow Laws. Many of those Southerners migrated to areas of New York, especially Harlem. In Harlem, young and creative African American writers, painters, performers, and musicians gathered and began developing new styles and ideas. This period of new creativity is known as the Harlem Renaissance.
Imagine that someone is visiting Harlem during this time period. What sites should they visit? Whose performances can they not miss? What book or poetry reading do they HAVE to hear?
