Procedure:
This lesson will take a week to complete and will be worked on in students’ English, History and Family/Consumer Science classes.
1. The class will be split up into groups of five.
The teacher will pick groups for the students at random.
2. Each group will create a name and logo for their tour guide company.
3. As a group, you will research many aspects of the Harlem Renaissance.
4. Your research must be based on primary sources from the Library of Congress.
5. A good way to start your research is the pathfinder link.
6. After extensive research, narrow your tour down to five stops or locations.
7. One stop must include an aspect of fashion of the Harlem Renaissance. For example, the clothing of performers or artists.
8. Using the five locations, create a brochure that advertises your tour.
9. The brochure must include detailed explanations of each location that are at least four to five sentences long.
10. Each location in the brochure must also have a relevant photo.
11. The company name and logo must be on the brochure.
12. Once all the groups have completed their brochures, each group will present their brochure to the class.
Presentations should be fairly short, about 5 minutes each plus Q & A from the class.
13. After all the groups present their brochure, the class will vote on which tour they would like to go on most.
14. Each student gets one vote and they are not allowed to vote for their own tour.
Students should put their heads on the desk and their eyes should be closed; the teacher must watch for students trying to vote more than once or for their own tour.
This lesson should be taught by an experienced teacher who can deal with students not working well in groups and who knows how to navigate the Library of Congress. The teacher is responsible for keeping students on task on this project for an entire week and providing alternative work for any group that finishes early.
